Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're new to Happy Tails or just looking for a little more information,
we've gathered answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
What makes your service different from other pet sitters?
Happy Tails stays intentionally small. Limiting our roster gives each client relationship room to grow. We learn your pets’ routines and your household’s rhythms, so care reflects the specifics of your home. You get consistency and professionalism visit to visit and clear communication throughout.
Do you board pets in your home?
No, our services are provided in the client’s home, which is less stressful for your pet and allows us to tailor every visit to their individual routine and needs.
What types of pets do you care for?
We specialize in cats and dogs, though we’re happy to extend our care to any birds, fish, or pocket pets (such as hamsters, ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs) that share their home. We are not currently able to accommodate exotic animals or reptiles.
Do you have breed restrictions?
No. We do not have any breed-based restrictions. Each pet is evaluated individually based on temperament, behavior, individual needs, and safety. Owners must disclose any history of biting, scratching, escape behavior, or other safety concerns so we can properly determine whether we are able to provide appropriate care. We are unable to accept pets with a documented bite history or pattern of dangerous behavior.
Are vaccinations required?
Yes. All cats, dogs, and ferrets must have a current rabies vaccination, with documentation uploaded to the Client Portal.
Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
While there is no federal, state, or local licensing required for pet sitting, we hold ourselves to the highest professional standards. Ashley is a Certified Professional Pet Sitter through both PSI (Pet Sitters International) and NAPPS (National Association of Professional Pet Sitters), and certified in Pet First Aid and CPR. We are fully insured and bonded through Business Insurers of the Carolinas — proof of policy is available upon request.
Are you and your caregivers background checked?
Yes. Every owner and employee undergoes a comprehensive background check through AQUTRAC, a professional screening service.
Getting Started
How do I get started?
Getting started is simple! Submit our intake form or give us a call. We’ll start with a brief introductory conversation to learn more about you, your pets, and your care needs. If we’re a good initial fit, we’ll set up your Client Portal through Time To Pet, our secure online platform for managing your account, services, and communication. There, you’ll complete your account information and schedule a complimentary in-home Meet & Greet.
Is a Meet & Greet required for new clients?
Yes, without exception. The Meet & Greet allows us to meet you and your pet/s, review feeding and care routines, discuss home access, and ensure there is a mutual fit. Services are not confirmed until after this consultation is complete.
How do I book services?
All services must be requested in the Client Portal. While we strive to review and confirm requests as soon as possible, please allow up to two business days for a response. A request is not a confirmed reservation until we have accepted it and sent a confirmation notice.
Services & Scheduling
How are visits timed?
Essential visits are approximately 30 minutes; Signature visits are approximately 60 minutes. Timing may vary slightly based on pet and household needs or other circumstances such as weather. Custom visit lengths are available through our bespoke care plans.
Will visits happen at the same time every day?
All services are performed within the scheduled time blocks shown in the Client Portal. Exact arrival times are not generally guaranteed. We make reasonable efforts to maintain consistency in visit times, but timing may vary due to travel, traffic, weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances. More precise timing may be arranged when medically necessary, such as for time-sensitive medication, and must be approved in advance.
Do you offer overnight care?
Yes, but only on a limited basis to established clients. We also offer our Almost Overnight services, which combines a ~2-hour evening visit with a ~1-hour morning follow-up. Plans can also be customized depending on specific client needs.
Can you administer medications?
Yes, we are able to administer most medications in liquid, pill or transdermal form and injectable medications such as insulin or subcutaneous fluids. We may not be able to administer medications that have specialized handling or if your pet becomes unsafe to medicate.
Security & Safety
How will you access my home?
We require two independent, reliable methods of entry (such as a lockbox, keypad code, smart lock, or garage access) to ensure backup access in case smart locks malfunction, lose battery, or otherwise fail. We follow a no-key-retention policy and do not store, retain or transport physical keys outside of service times, unless a specific exception has been discussed and approved. If you need a lockbox, you’re welcome to provide your own or you can purchase one from us for $25.
Why don’t you keep keys?
Going keyless eliminates a lot of risk and hassle. No key exchanges are needed and there is little chance of a key getting lost or misplaced. Further, it allows us to access your home quickly and without any coordination in the event of an emergency or last-minute situation. And because entry codes and lockbox details are stored securely in your Client Portal, it’s easy to update the information on your end, and always accessible on ours.
What happens in severe weather?
The safety of your pets and our team is always our first priority. In cases of severe weather, we may adjust our visit timing or duration, or modify services to keep everyone safe, such as swapping a walk for a quick potty break and indoor playtime during heavy rain or high temperatures. For the rare situations where we are truly physically unable to reach your home, we will contact you to arrange alternative care.
What if pet food, litter, or medication runs out during my service period?
If essential supplies run out during our service period, we will purchase replacements on your behalf to ensure continuity of care. The cost of these supplies will be added to your invoice, plus a $15 service fee.
Communication & Photos
How will I hear from you during a visit?
All communication is streamlined in the Client Portal. After every visit, you will receive a real-time update with notes, photos, and a summary that are either emailed or pushed as an app notification, depending on your preferences. Any questions or concerns can be messaged to us in the Client Portal and we will respond in kind.
Do you take photos of my pet?
We may photograph or record your pets during services for care updates and internal documentation. We will not use this media for marketing or public promotion without your consent. When shared publicly with permission, we take reasonable care to avoid showing addresses, security details, travel information, or other identifying information about your home or household.
